In a powerful symbol of Gaza’s collapsing humanitarian conditions, hundreds of desperate Palestinians stormed a World Food Programme warehouse in central Gaza on Wednesday, tearing through aid supplies and leaving chaos in their wake.

The WFP warehouse in Deir al-Balah had been stocked with urgently needed food—meant for coordinated distribution—but was overtaken by crowds described by the United Nations as “hungry people in search of food.”

“Gaza needs an immediate step-up of food assistance,” said WFP officials. “This is the only way to reassure people they will not starve.”

⚠️ Humanitarian Chaos in Gaza: What Happened?

  • 🏚️ WFP warehouse looted by hundreds on May 26 in Deir al-Balah

  • ⚠️ At least 2 people feared dead, dozens injured amid the unrest

  • 🔫 The day prior, Israeli soldiers used live fire to control a food aid site mobbed by starving families

  • 🚑 The UN Office for Human Rights reported 47 injured on Tuesday, with several more hurt on Wednesday

The looting reflects widespread desperation as Gaza’s 2.1 million residents teeter on the brink of famine, following nearly three months of siege and blockade.

📉 Breakdown of Gaza’s Food Supply Crisis

  • 🛑 Israel’s military operations have severely limited aid access

  • 🚛 Only ~900 trucks entered Gaza in 10 days — a fraction of the pre-conflict average of 700 per day

  • 🛣️ Just ~200 trucks reached distribution warehouses, due to ongoing combat

“This is comparable to a lifeboat after the ship has sunk,” said Sigrid Kaag, UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process.

🚧 GHF’s Militarized Aid Model Faces Backlash

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a newly created and Israel-backed initiative, has taken over some food distribution efforts — but with controversial tactics:

  • 🔫 Foreign mercenaries and Israeli troops guard aid convoys

  • ❌ Boycotted by most humanitarian organizations due to ethical concerns

  • 🛑 Key leaders have resigned, citing the inability to uphold humanitarian principles

Critics warn GHF’s southern-only distribution could coerce mass displacement by forcing starving Gazans to move south.

“Many want to see us fail,” GHF said in a statement. “Even if it means risking life-saving aid to the people of Gaza.”

🗣️ Allegations & Propaganda Fuel Further Tensions

Israel’s military spokesperson Avichai Adraee claimed—without evidence—that Hamas had stockpiled food in the looted WFP warehouse. However, the WFP confirmed ownership of the site and said the aid was pre-positioned for distribution.

The UN and other humanitarian agencies continue to reject Israel’s accusations of systematic aid theft by Hamas, citing no credible evidence of orchestrated diversion.
