At least 19 fatalities were recorded in China’s southern Guangdong province on Wednesday following the collapse of a section of highway amidst days of severe weather, including heavy rain and flooding.

In the early hours of Wednesday, eighteen vehicles plunged down a slope when a 58.7-foot (17.9-meter) segment of the highway gave way, as reported by the Associated Press, citing statements from local authorities in Meizhou city, Guangdong.
Images and videos circulating on social media depicted flames and smoke billowing from the collapsed portion of the highway, alongside vehicles partially buried under debris and mud.
State broadcaster CCTV noted that 30 individuals were rescued from the scene and are currently undergoing intensive medical treatment in hospitals.
Authorities have mobilized over 500 personnel to assist in the ongoing rescue efforts, though it remains unclear if additional individuals are still trapped.
