LAPD Confirms Arrest at Grammy Venue Following Physical Altercation

Update: The LAPD confirmed to Deadline that an individual was taken into custody at the venue where the Grammys were taking place earlier today due to a “physical altercation” that occurred earlier in the day. The man was not specifically identified as Killer Mike by the police by name, though the statement made by the official seems to almost surely make it clear the arrest was of the rapper.

Original Story: Killer Mike is seemingly experiencing both one of the best days of his career and perhaps one of the worst. The rapper won three Grammys just a short time ago, but not long after he accepted the prizes, he was reportedly taken away from the ceremony at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, CA in handcuffs by police officers.

The news of Mike’s arrest was first reported by Chris Gardner of The Hollywood Reporter. He shared videos of the rapper being led away in handcuffs by several police officers on social media.

Gardner posted that at the time, he was unable to learn exactly what Mike was charged with, though he reported that an official stated it was “a misdemeanor.” That same unnamed official also stated that the arrest has “nothing to do with anything that happened today here inside the arena.”

Mike was nominated for three Grammys this year, and he swept them all. He won Best Rap Album for his semi-self-titled “Mike.” He also claimed both Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for his single “Scientists & Engineers.” That track features André 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane, who all also took home awards for their work with Mike.

Going into the televised portion of the Grammy Awards, Mike is tied for the second-most wins so far this year. He’s matched with Boygenius, who won both rock and alternative honors. Only Phoebe Bridgers, who is one-third of that band, has won more, as she’s earned four trophies, including one separate from the group she’s a part of.

In the past, Mike has won a single Grammy, so he upped his career total considerably tonight. He won his first—and until now, only award—back in 2003 as a featured artist on OutKast’s “The Whole World.” He was nominated again in 2018 as part of the group Run the Jewels alongside OutKast member Big Boi and Danger Mouse, but they didn’t take home the trophy that year.

The 2024 Grammy Awards are only halfway over. Dozens of trophies have been given out at what’s called the Premiere Ceremony, which takes place before the televised show. The second part of the Grammys should begin at 5:00 PM PST/8:00 PM EST.
