Renowned Hollywood actor and former NFL player Carl Weathers, recognized for his iconic roles in the “Rocky” film series, “Predator,” and “The Mandalorian,” has passed away at the age of 76, as confirmed by his manager, Matt Luber.
The family released a statement expressing deep sadness and revealed that Weathers peacefully passed away in his sleep on Thursday.
Weathers gained fame for portraying boxer Apollo Creed alongside Sylvester Stallone in the original “Rocky” and reprised the role in three sequels. His character’s legacy continued in the “Creed” franchise with Michael B. Jordan taking on the role.
In the 1987 film “Predator,” Weathers delivered a memorable performance as CIA officer Al Dillon opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger.
His recent notable role was as Greef Karga in the Disney+ “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian,” earning him an Emmy nomination in 2021 for outstanding guest actor in a drama series. Weathers also directed episodes of the show.
Beyond his acting career, Weathers played the title character in the 1988 action film “Action Jackson,” a golf coach in Adam Sandler’s comedy “Happy Gilmore,” and voiced Combat Carl in Disney’s animated film “Toy Story 4.” He starred in TV crime dramas “Street Justice” and “In the Heat of the Night” and portrayed a comedic version of himself on “Arrested Development.”
Before venturing into acting, Weathers played college football at San Diego State University and had a brief stint in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders in 1970. He continued his football career in the Canadian Football League.
Remembered as an exceptional human being who led an extraordinary life, Weathers left an indelible mark on film, television, sports, and the arts. He is survived by two children.
