Microsoft plans to train 2M Indians in AI, says Nadella

Microsoft’s Strategic Investments in AI Elevate Company to World’s Most Valuable Status

Microsoft’s foresight and bold investments in artificial intelligence (AI) have propelled the tech giant to the forefront of the industry, securing its position as the world’s most valuable company. However, Satya Nadella, the typically reserved CEO, couldn’t resist delivering a pointed remark to the rest of the industry.

During a company event in Mumbai on Wednesday, Nadella remarked, “We have the best model today… even with all the hoopla, one year after, GPT4 is better.” He added, “We are waiting for the competition to arrive. It will arrive, I’m sure, but the fact [is] that we have the… leading LLM out there.”

Nadella’s rare moment of candidness occurred as he highlighted Microsoft’s increasingly robust lineup of AI offerings to leaders of some of India’s largest companies. In his 35-minute keynote address, Nadella emphasized the importance for businesses to explore AI deployment to enhance productivity and refine products, while cautioning against falling behind in the rapidly evolving landscape.

Encouraging India to intensify its efforts and prioritize AI, Nadella emphasized, “This new capability, AI, is going to have an impact on GDP.” His remarks underscore Microsoft’s commitment to advancing AI technology and empowering businesses to harness its potential for growth and innovation.

Hailing from India himself, Nadella emphasized that the South Asian nation has emerged as the second-largest talent pool for AI developers on GitHub. Puneet Chandok, who left a senior position at AWS India last year to join Microsoft and now leads the company’s operations in India and South Asia, remarked, “India is not just incredible anymore. We are credible as well. India is starting to dream big, and going after this dream like our lives depend on it.”

Microsoft also unveiled plans to provide AI skilling opportunities to 2 million Indians in smaller cities and towns by the next year. Nadella expressed his hope that consensus would emerge, facilitating the diffusion of this technology and fostering socio-economic progress.

Reflecting on the evolving landscape, Nadella noted, “This is the first time I feel what is happening in India and the rest of the world, there is no gap. If anything, the use cases here are so unique and paving their own path.”

Highlighting one such distinctive initiative, Nadella later mentioned Karya, an “ethical data company” that curates datasets in various Indian languages to train AI models while offering employment and educational opportunities to individuals in rural areas.
