Namibian President Hage Geingob passed away on Sunday while undergoing medical treatment, as announced by his office. He was 82 years old. The Namibian presidency shared the news on the social media platform X, stating that Geingob’s medical team at Lady Pohamba Hospital had made every effort to assist him, but he succumbed to the illness with his wife, Monica Geingos, and children at his side.
Geingob had been receiving treatment for cancer, with a colonoscopy, gastroscopy, and biopsy conducted on January 8, according to his office’s statement last month.
Namibia’s acting president, Angolo Mbumba, urged for calm in the wake of Geingob’s passing, assuring that the Cabinet would promptly convene to make necessary state arrangements.
Having served as Namibia’s president since 2015, Geingob was slated to complete his second and final term in office this year. He had previously revealed surviving prostate cancer in 2014.
Namibia is scheduled to hold elections in November to choose a new leader.
