Taylor Swift’s Album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ Debuts Atop Billboard Charts

Apr 28, 2024,04:23pm EDT

Taylor Swift’s 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” is set to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart tomorrow, marking Swift’s 14th chart-topping debut and concluding the album’s groundbreaking first week.

With its No. 1 debut, “The Tortured Poets Department” ties Taylor Swift with Jay-Z as the solo artist with the most No. 1 albums, although she still trails behind The Beatles, who hold the record with 19 chart-topping albums.

The album achieved an impressive 2.61 million equivalent album units in its debut week, with each unit representing one album sale, 10 tracks sold from the album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid audio or video streams of songs from the album.

In a remarkable feat, Swift’s album quickly became the best-selling album of the year, with the second best-selling album—Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter”—selling just 228,000 copies, according to Billboard.

Reacting to the news of her album’s No. 1 debut, Swift expressed her disbelief and gratitude on social media, thanking her fans for their overwhelming support.

Surprisingly, over half of the equivalent album units for “The Tortured Poets Department” came from traditional album sales, with 1.914 million units attributed to purchases of digital download albums, CDs, vinyl records, and cassettes.

As of Sunday, Forbes estimates Swift’s net worth to be around $1.1 billion, largely attributed to her successful Eras Tour, which became the first tour in history to gross $1 billion.

Fans eagerly await to see if Swift will incorporate any songs from her new 31-track album into her ongoing Eras Tour, which resumes on May 9 in Paris. Swift’s latest album, released on April 19, explores themes of grief, heartbreak, and coping with fame, receiving mixed reviews but setting numerous streaming and sales records in its first week.
