Y Combinator Issues Fresh Call for Startups in AI, Spatial Computing, Climate Tech, and Beyond

2:51 PM GMT•February 14, 2024

Y Combinator has broadened its scope for potential startups, adding spatial computing, climate tech, and various applications of AI to its latest Request for Startups (RFS) list, announced on Wednesday. Dalton Caldwell, YC Managing Director, outlined the call for startups in a recent blog post, marking the first update to the RFS since 2018.

In previous years, Y Combinator tailored its startup requests to address pressing issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for climate-focused initiatives. Notably, healthcare remains a priority, with a focus on cancer solutions, foundational models for biological systems, innovative healthcare service organizations, and streamlining healthcare processes by eliminating intermediaries.

Unsurprisingly, AI technology featured prominently in the new list, encompassing machine learning applications in robotics and physical world simulations, “explainable AI,” fine-tuned models, large language models for enterprise processes, and AI-driven enterprise software development. The list also introduced the need for enhanced “enterprise glue” and the development of new enterprise resource planning software.

The RFS also identified interest areas like defense technology, space exploration ventures, and initiatives to revitalize manufacturing in the U.S.

Y Combinator’s attention to “spatial computing” stems partly from Apple’s launch of the Vision Pro, indicating potential opportunities in mixed reality environments introduced by AR/VR headsets like the Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3.

Notably absent from the list are digital currencies and crypto technologies, except for a single request related to stablecoin finance.

While Y Combinator remains open to startups outside these categories, the RFS serves as a guide for entrepreneurs, highlighting areas likely to attract investor interest and funding.

Caldwell emphasized the hope that the updated list will inspire founders to explore new ventures or encourage existing projects to apply to Y Combinator. Applications for YC’s Summer 2024 batch are currently open, with early admission due by February 20 and the general application deadline set for April 22.
